Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary

Inspired by the Spirit to follow Jesus in the style of Mary, the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary respond to a call inviting them to be:

“Its specific vocation within the Church is to be, at the same time Missionaries, Marist Sisters" (Constitutions SMSM 5)

We are an international congregation with over 500 sisters who come from many countries around the world to participate in evangelization by "the missionary presence, life and the proclamation of the Gospel and the apostolic service" (SMSM Constitutions 14). Gathered from diverse backgrounds and nationalities respond to the universal call to mission in 27 countries. "Among other people and in our own country, respect and dialogue, try to be bonds of communion between peoples, races and cultures, and witness the universal love" (ibid. 22).

In the course of our history, our congregation has been known under various names: the beginning we have called Sisters of Charity of the Third Order of Mary, and later Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Mary. Since our official approval as a congregation of pontifical right in 1931 our official name is Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary. Today in some countries are known simply by the name of sisters "SMSM" or as Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary.
